Ai Sketch to Vector (via autotrace) Tutorial
Posted on 29. Apr, 2009 by Che McPherson in Illustrator, Intermediate
In this tutorial we will show you how to go from sketch to vector and maintain that hand-drawn look.
We start off cleaning the image in photoshop dont freak if you havnt got it, all photo editing software should have very similar functions.
The take it into illustrator and use the automated live trace tool, which I normaly think auto anything does a pretty terrible job but for rough hand-drawn linework it will work just perfectly. In up and coming tutorials I will show how to clean up an autotrace image so you have clean crisp lines and some of the other ways to take your beautiful art out of your sketch pads and onto your screens.
Ive finally learnt how to add call-outs which i think are an awesome addition to the tutorials.
and as always I would love to here from you as your feedback will help mold this site.

Some really great shortcuts and tips in here, thanks for sharing this!
Awesome site. I like this tutorial. It covers the fundamentals really well, but also has cool artwork, and it looks doable, like I could sketch that without having to spend hours on it. Great job!
Yah, I love Vimeo, but we had an issue with the Tuts+ sites. Basically, Vimeo worked great for months, but at some point Psdtuts+ and Vectortuts+ got too big and they didn’t want us on there anymore. The issue is that Vimeo is for non-commercial endeavors. So, we moved to Blip, which caters more to commercial shows. I’ve been using Blip.tv for about 3 months now. It’s just something to watch out for as your site grows. Thx.

Huge thanks for the heads up Sean
I instinctively knew I would need a scanner sooner or later. Thanks for filling in the gaps with this video! The Pathfinder is easily my favorite tool in Illustrator… seems even more indispensable after learning how to do those fill gradients as highlights on the fly.
Also helps to know about cmd/ctrl+f being the paste that doesn’t move (used to just use cmd/ctrl+v). You can hold down alt while clicking and dragging to drag and place a duplicate object you had selected as well.
