The Future of TUTcandy It’s Your Choice

Posted on 18. Nov, 2009 by Che McPherson in Illustrator, Intermediate, advanced, beginner, photoshop

Hey gangalang…
This site is set up for you.. yes you, dont look over your shoulder.
Unfortunately of late other priorities have kept me from keeping all of you precious watchers updated with fresh regular tutorials.

Ive been jamming a lot of ideas about how best to keep you guys updated with a steady stream of TUTcandy goodness. But as I said this site is for you, so today I have a question to put to you all… your chance to change the future of TUTcandy.

I have been considering launching a section on the site dedicated to el primo tutorials on a subscription base.

Here’s an idea of what Subscriptions will include.

  • Special access to premium release tutorials including guest tutorials from the industries movers and shakers.
  • Access to assets (ai & ps goodies)  including actions, brushes, vectors and all other source where applicable.
  • An ever so sexy air app so you can watch your tutorials straight from your desktop.
  • More of me… well I know this isn’t anything special, but the site will include a request section and many other goodies.

All that for less then a cup of coffee each month…

Now with that said I never had any intentions of charging for tutorials, and I will always keep up the stream of regular free tutorials but this will allow me to spend more time delivering better tutorials to all of you…

So please cast your vote for the future of TUTcandy

yeah you go subscription your site will fail big time, no one will pay for this whemn there’s hundreds of other sites doing just the same. hell there’s hundreds of sites doing this that use the same damn blog theme, layout, and stealing from each other’s top xx lists of shit.

  2. admin says:

yeah I totally feel your point…
The thing is, a lot of tutorials out there aren’t from real designers, so while there is millions of people offering free tutorials they are just that free tutorials… If you want any solid real world information and tutorials you need to sign up to Lynda.com or the TUTplus network and im only talking a fraction of the cost of those… and all content created here is exclusive to this site

But thank you so much for your comment… please id love to here from more of you

It sounds good in theory, but you stated in your post that priorities have kept you away. Playing devil’s advocate here, will charging for tutorials ensure that you will update the site regularly, or will other paying jobs take precedence the responsibility to your subscribers?

  4. admin says:

Yes I see your point, unfortunately it cost a lot more then time to run a site like this.

Yes im a very busy freelancer, so daily monthly weekly priorities often squeeze out scheduled time I have to spend on this site.

But this would not be just a matter of flicking a switch tomorrow and we have subscriptions It would be something TUTcandy works really hard towards.

I realize I have to commit, now leading up and even more so during.

Either way I intend to give the site more love, just in what ways is up to your votes

Hi, when i came the first time to this site i was amazed, high quality tutorials for free! but the thing stopped and i didnt saw this being updated so i thought you were going to leave it, now that you are thinking on bringing a subscription fee i think is a good idea if you keep doing tutorials for free, and the subscription fee isnt very high.

  6. Uqba says:

noooooooooooooooooooo subscriptions pleasee!! :( JUST PUT YOUR ROUGH DRAFTS HERE> WE WILL STILL BE HAPPY :)

  7. admin says:

hahahahaha thank you… yes regardless I will still keep you updated with regular free tutorials

  8. jim says:

Yeah, ‘regular’ has not really been the name of the game here. I have been disappointed with the number of times i visit the site and dont get any tutorials. If your not motivated to do it for free (regularly) but you are motivated by money then I imagine the number and quality of the free tutorials will suffer. I think you need to run free for a while, maybe get the advertising to cover the costs? I dont mean to sound judgmental just honest

  9. admins says:

very good point Jim… tks for your input… as I mentioned either way Im going to give the site some more love… to what amount Im letting you guys decide…

    Ki Ora Che,

Firstly, TUTcandy.com is a great site – thanks so much for giving back to the industry! I know many other up-n-coming and qualified designers that love using the tutorials and learning from your epic [design] wisdom.
I voted ‘what are you waiting for’, and will definitely subscribe. Your skills are worth something, and it’s really important to charge for them - that in itself should be one of your tutorials… ;)
You shouldn’t worry too much about the negative feedback about subscription fees, especially if you’re planning to have free ones thrown in the mix anyway. Anyone that really wants’ to know what you do, should pay the price (physically) like you have (hypothetically)…

    Cheers!

Hi, first time here but the tutorials look great. I think you could do subscription as long as you do extra tutorials for this, that the subscription is paying you to do them, like a freelance job. Not that i think you should do things for free, but for users used to free stuff from you there has to be the perception of value.

Whatever you decide all the stuff you put up so far is an outstanding effort. I shall enjoy adding to my knowledge with yours.

    Good luck :)

I found your site a few days ago. I have watched every tut. I would pay a small monthly fee to keep with the quality you deliver in your tuts. I personally have learned a lot from them already. The fee would have to be an amount that most people would be happy to pay for and you would need to have a dedicated time that you wanted to publish updates. So people will know they are at least getting x amount per a month.

I can understand totally on why you would like to charge, and maybe having a split free/paid site is the best way to go to insure that everyone is going to receive tuts on a regular. Either way I’m behind it, there’s some quality work in these vids and i hope we’ll see more soon.

  14. admin says:

Thanks everyone for your input… I realize this site has to grow, for now I’m going to make it grow with content so that’s the near future for TUT candy, long term I intend to grow the site to cater to everyone, after looking at the votes I think subscriptions will be something I work towards but im not foolish enough to realize where my traffic comes from and that’s the high quality free tutorials… please feel free to continue the discussion any imput or ideas are more then welcome

  15. Samer Bazzi says:

the best way to go is this:

    1. Free section with great content.

    2. Paid section with Very high content, free tools, direct communication with you :)

I voted to keep it free. But your videos are great. I would pay. PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPlease let it be cheap!

  17. Elektic says:

How about doing cq posting some more tuts first.
I have been coming here on and of since the beginning of this year. I like the tuts you got up. But its enough. Check the trends. Add some typography tuts, some proper photo manipulations and mix some ps with Poser and C4D.

I’m a video editor by trade, but do a lot of design in Photoshop for the internet show I do called iBall. (www.iball.me)

I’ve learned so much about design from you and have loved all of your tutorials.

It’s so nice to have someone who is obviously very talented who works in the industry who is willing to share the string of ideas and techniques that they use when they go through a design. So many people would be too precious about this.

I’d pay your subscription, because I’d know that I was getting quality.
There’s nothing wring with paying a little amount (about £5-8 per month maybe)
if you know you are getting PROPER techniques, used all over the industry to help create quality images.

You’re giving your time to share your knowledge off your own back. That is something that I’ll always champion.

I’m in!!! Bring on the subscriptions and more of the quality info we’ve had. :)

Also if you could get some other of your boys involved who have create images using different techniques. It’d be all the better. Allowing someone into your design world is a wonderful thing. The more the merrier…….

    ….I’ll stop ranting now. Sorry.

    Take care! :)

As someone that has you on my RSS feeder, I look forward to your posts. They are always on the ball and very informative. Props on making great screencasts with great results!

That being the case, I want to see more of your content posted regularly. As a consumer, I want to make sure I will get content updated rather regularly which is something that I can’t say I would see now. I don’t mean to come across as judgmental, but I would love to trust you to give me my money’s worth from a paid subscription.

The best way to do that, in my opinion is develop the free resources first. Show us all that you will post regularly (whether it’s every 3 days or 3 weeks, stick to it!) and that everything you post is good stuff. Then I know I could trust you to give me killer subscription fees.

Call me a cheapskate, but I’m a college student who freelances part-time. I want to make sure my money is well spent, which is something I could definitely see come from you. I just want the guarantee. :)

    *gets off soapbox*

  20. erfon says:

hey! yeah really love the site, totally understand it’s a major time taker. i have two suggestions.

1 - provide free lessons, but also provide an option where people can pay to access more lessons and also maybe source material so they can try the lessons with you. lynda.com does this and i think it works great.

2 - stop trying to do everything yourself! instead of working endlessly on tutortials, spend a good chunk of time looking for contributing writers. as a fellow entrepenuer, i know it’s hard to not just do everything yourself, but it’s the only way if you want to have a life and still have cool projects like this going…

i agree that charging a fee for this site probably wouldn’t work, and even if it did, you’d need more than you writing tutorials to be able to create enough content for people to want to pay for it…
